Minor Team Tennis League
Minor Team Tennis League play is based on Tennis Canada's Community Team Tennis (CTT) model. It emphasizes learning and enjoyment while introducing kids to competitive tennis in a low stress team environment. A PDF describing CTT is available by selecting the next sub-tab.
Capilano Tennis Club is planning to host a Southeast Edmonton Minor Tennis League in summer 2013. This league will be structured into three age group divisions:
1. Under 10 (Tuesdays 4:30 - 6:00 PM) will use red balls, popup mini-nets and a half-size court to make it easier for young children to cover the court and to learn to control the ball while having fun and developing basic skills.
2. Under 13 (Wednesdays 4:30-6:00 PM) will use orange balls and play on a 3/4 size court, with regulation nets. This is the next progression from the beginner 'red ball' level, and allows kids to use their growing bodies and skills to more closely approximate regulation tennis, while recognizing their still limited size and strength.
3. Under 16 (Thursdays 4:30-6:00 PM) will use green dot balls (lower compression than regulation balls) and regulation courts. This is the final stage before kids start to play regular tennis. The lower compression balls are a little easier to control and help to compensate for the kids' still immature bodies, but readies them to move onto regulation tennis as soon as they demonstrate the skills, court movement and ball control required.
Minor League Tennis will start Tuesday July 2, and will run for the next eight (8) consecutive weeks. Early weeks will involve assessment of skills, organizing into teams and an emphasis on coaching before competitive play. When the head coach (Capilano pro Ryan Townsend) determines that the kids are ready to start competitive matches, a team competitive match schedule will be set up, with approximately one hour of the regular 90 minute time allocated to matches. Every session will start with warmup exercises and individual team coaching. The club will provide a qualified assistant coach, but particularly for the younger age groups, we will ask parents to volunteer to help out.
Registration may be handled by emailing the child's name and age to capilanotennis@gmail.com, along with contact information including email address, contact phone numbers) and name(s) of responsible adults. Registration cost for the entire season is just $100 (only $90 for Capilano club members), cash or cheque payable to 'Capilano Tennis Club'. If desired, registration for Minor Tennis league may also be submitted at the Capilano clubhouse. Registration for each age group will be restricted to 24 children
We are also looking for parent volunteers. If you can volunteer to help our pro out in running weekly league matches, registration cost for your child will be reduced by $10.
